Stale Gum

In June of last year, while waiting to board our plane to Cabo,

My mom said “do you want a piece of slightly stale gum?”

I said, “As slightly good as that offer sounds, no thank you.”

Also today, on the plane, as we began our descent to Cabo…

My mom held out the same pack of gum and said “are you sure you don’t want a piece?”

Immediately we began laughing and I jokingly said, “stop trying to make stale gum happen!” and then added “okay, I’ll try it, though you really gotta stop settling for stale gum.”

My mind began chattering away to me…

“Stale gum is better than no gum, be grateful for any gum.”

“There are far worse things in the world than stale gum.”

I mostly enjoyed the stale gum and genuinely appreciated it for what it was and I now have a renewed respect for non-stale gum. I also cherish the humorous moment that came out of this exchange.

AND, sometimes all you have is stale gum and sometimes that IS better than no gum. AND, you can remain grateful and also know you still deserve gum in its best form.

P.S. stale moments aren’t meant to last forever.
