An Aquaphor Metaphor-ISH

For as long as I can remember, one of my sensory issues has been with hand lotion (or any lotion in general, though particularly the sensory feeling of having it on my hands). Typically, even when I’ve tried to put on hand lotion, I end up washing my hands almost immediately. I’ve tried lotions that claim to be “no feel lotion” yet, I can feel the lotion. My hands tend to get dry and crack from washing them frequently and as mentioned, in a previous post, the ring I was wearing wore into my skin. I optimistically bought Aquaphor today and put it on to help soothe my hands. Immediately, I wanted to wash the Aquaphor off my hands. Yet, I told myself “just give it time.” I sat with the discomfort and sure enough the sensory discomfort subsided, naturally. Sometimes when we build our tolerance to sit in discomfort, the comfort naturally returns. Sometimes we have to let the Aquaphor of life sink in, in order for it to naturally work its healing magic. Voilà, An Aquaphor Metaphor-ISH.
